In 2005 Putney
launched its Global Awareness in Action programs-opportunities
to explore through first-hand experience the serious
challenges facing the developing world. Four summers later,
Global Action has developed into two separate families of
programs. Public Health programs focus on the challenges
presented by HIV/AIDS, other infectious diseases, and
environmental pollution, while World Issues program topics
range from social to economic and environmental challenges.
In both groupings, participants lend a hand in concrete
service projects while also engaging in research and
extensive discussion of their specific program’s focus
issue.
Creating the Global
Community—Yale University
Each set of Global Action programs begins at
Yale with separate intensive two-day orientations.
Discussions, focused seminars, and film-screenings set the
tone for a global perspective that enriches the
participants’ time in country and inspires preliminary
research. After three and a half weeks, each set of programs
returns to Yale for separate two-day debriefings.
Participants organize and present their findings to the
other groups through in-depth multimedia analysis of their
research and experience. Families are welcome to attend
these creative and interesting presentations. As a Global
Awareness in Action community, students discuss
possibilities for their own constructive future action,
ensuring a long-term commitment to solving some of the
developing world’s most serious problems.
Global Awareness in Action programs demand
exceptional commitment and maturity on the part of group
members. For their application essay, students must submit
300-500 words describing their interest in the area and
themes they wish to pursue, along with their relevant
community service and/or academic background. While these
are not primarily community service programs, participants
can expect to perform between 20 to 40 hours of service and
will receive a certificate reflecting this upon successful
completion of the program. Living conditions in the
communities we visit are simple, and the challenges these
communities face are constantly evolving. Global Action
members must be tough, adaptable, and enthusiastic about
taking advantage of unforeseen opportunities. All programs
begin and end at Yale University.
Global Action World Issues
(Program Dates: July 3 –August 3)
Global Action World Issues participants
travel to Cambodia, China, El Salvador, India, or Madagascar
for 3 ˝ weeks of service projects and research emphasizing
interaction with local people, from villagers to NGO work
workers and government officials. Through their experiences
and the relationships they forge, participants become active
members of the global community and help to devise workable
strategies for resolving global problems. As part of their
time in-country, students develop and carry out independent
projects that focus on particular aspects of the larger
issue their group is studying.
Global Action Public Health
(Program Dates: June 29 – July 30)
Global Action Public Health participants travel to China,
Malawi, Rwanda, or South Africa for 3 ˝ weeks to de develop
an in-depth understanding of the most pressing public health
challenges facing local people. From joint projects with
community-based HIV/AIDS support organizations to
discussions with NGOs advocating more comprehensive
healthcare and greater transparency of health records, the
group gets to the heart of issues while respecting their
overwhelming complexity. Students also embark on independent
projects that may include recording oral histories,
assessing local traditional methods of health care, or
researching related topics of personal interest.
